The Bridge the Gap to Health race was the recipient of a generous gift from Trees For Tomorrow group. On Friday, April 4, a tree was planted at front and Hampshire donated by Tom Bergman at Bergman Nurseries as a gift to the race. The tree was placed at front and Hampshire in honor of Oscar who recently passed away and was the catalyst who began the MedAssist revolution here in Quincy.
The prescription medication movement in the Quincy community began roughly in 1995. It began with a patient named Oscar. Oscar had many lingering/debilitating medical issues that impacted the quality of his life. After chronic non-compliance with medication regimens his doctor began to give him a hard time as to why this was taking place. After a great deal of pressure and prodding by his doctor, Oscar’s daughter stood up to the doctor voicing her frustrations. She enlightened the doctor that Oscar’s chronic medication non-compliance was because Oscar simply could not afford the prescribed medications due to no type of insurance coverage. As a result, Dr. John Scott, with the help of the PATCH committee, began group discussions as to what could be done in the community. This led to the formation of the Quincy Catholic Charities MedAssist Program, which was launched in January 2000.
Pictured above from left to right are Sarah Davidson, Oscar's daughter, Dr. John Scott, Bridge the Gap committee member, Ann St. John, Chairman Trees for Tomorrow, and Kurt Stuckman, QCC Area Director.
The BTG committee would like to thank Ann St. John and Trees for Tomorrow, and Bergman Nurseries for the generosity extended!
All proceeds from Bridge the Gap benefit the Quincy Catholic Charities MedAssist Program that leverages free prescription medications for people with chronic medical conditions.

10K Race Route Modification
As a way to consistently monitor the race course for safety and to ensure runners and walkers a clutter free race course the 10K course this year will have a slight modification. Throughout the past few years, and especially in 2007 with the increase in race participants, the BTG committee has noticed an issue for the 10k runners coming off of the Bayview Bridge and getting bottle necked with the walkers at second and Broadway. As a result a slight directional change was made for the 2008 event to cut down on the congestion at second and Broadway. The change for 2008 is when the 10k runners come off of the Bayview Bridge instead of running down Broadway to Bonansingna Drive they will now come off of Bayview Bridge and catch 2nd street heading North up to Riverview Park. They will then proceed to Quinsippi Island then back down Bonansingna Drive to the finish line. Below is a map indicating the updated 10k route for 2008.Due to the race course not changing, just the route, this will not impact the certification already in place for the 10K course. THIS IS THE SAME ROUTE THAT THE HALF MARATHONERS WILL FOLLOW AS WELL!

Race Date for 2008!
After careful consideration and working around schedules, the Bridge The Gap Committee has elected that the race for next year will be Saturday, April 12, 2008. In future years it is the overall goal of the committee to ensure the race is scheduled for the last Saturday in April. Thus mark your schedules and stay tuned to the website for further updates about the 2008 event including the race course for the half marathon.Digital Timing For 2008

The Bridge The Gap committee is pleased to announce we have secured Fleet Feet out of St. Charles, Missouri to provide digital (DAG) timing for the event in 2008. The committee felt with the addition of the half marathon this will assist our ability to provide the most technological timing mechanism possible. The timing chip will be located in the race bibs and can be kept after the race or disposed of at the participants will!
Please be advised the digital timing for the 2008 event will capture the competitive walker/runners NET TIME for the race NOT GUN TIME. This means your time will not start until you cross over the actual starting line pad and stops once you cross over the finish line. Thus looking at the clock as you cross the finish line may not be an accurate account of your finish time.
Timing will NOT be kept for those individuals who are in the leisure walker category.
